How to Disable Automatic Updates in WordPress Website

WordPress is becoming the greatest platform for building an aesthetic and easily maintainable Website. WordPress features a lot of functionalities that help to create a website easily. All the core facilities and functionalities are kept by the core WordPress team. They are doing a fantastic job to give us the best services. Do you know that WordPress can automatically update your website? In some cases, that can include plugins and themes too.  Updating the WordPress website is an important part of maintaining your website’s security. Despite the security benefits, there is a slight possibility that these background updates can break your site. To make a clear sense about this topic now I’m going to share with you how to disable automatic updates in WordPress website, so you can manually update on your own.

Why WordPress Updates Automatically

For many security reasons, WordPress automatically updates the core WordPress software. Sometimes, it may also update a plugin or theme to fix an expected danger or potential threat. For example, a WordPress plugin or theme may be updated to expel a basic weakness. In that case, the core WordPress team pushes out an automatic update for the plugin or theme when it is used by a lot of websites at a time. Aside from those situations, WordPress lets you decide when you want to install updates.

I don’t recommend disabling the automatic updates of the WordPress website. These are important security features to keep your WordPress website secure and safe. But, in some rare circumstances, these updates can break your website or affect its functionality. This could prompt you to lose business and clients. If you feel that you’re much enough confident to manage manual updates yourself, then you can safely disable automatic updates in WordPress.

Why Do You Need To Disable Automatic Updates In WordPress Website?

As I mentioned earlier, WordPress pushes up automatic updates for minor changes automatically.  It’s very important for WordPress security issues. Let me discuss the pros and cons of disabling automatic updates in WordPress Website.

Pros of Automatic Updates in WordPress Website

As you know the automatic update of the WordPress website is essential for many security issues. Sometimes, many users forget to update their core WordPress installation, plugins, and theme. The hackers can easily break down the backdated versions. Every new update comes with a lot of new features. If you enabled the automatic update of your WordPress website, then you don’t need to worry about updating your website whenever a minor update to WordPress is released. It’ll update automatically.

If there’s a significant security issue with WordPress or a popular plugin, then WordPress will automatically update. Moreover, if you’re busy or away from home, your website will stay secure and safe with the new edition. If you have multiple websites at the same then the automatic update is the best option to save your time. So, it’s quite good to have enabled automatic updates on the WordPress website.

Cons Of Automatic Updates In WordPress Website

All the updates are maintained and released by the core WordPress team, and it’s also their responsibility for taking care of everything that is going well. But, there is a slight possibility that automatic updates can break your website. If you modify WordPress’s core files, then these automatic updates can override them. If WordPress ever felt it is important to push out a security update for a theme that you are using, then it’s quite possible to break your website. This especially applies if you have modified your theme files.

Sometimes automatic plugin updates can probably break your website as well. There is simply an excessive number of factors, for example, different server environments and plugin combinations. Presently it’s imperative to realize that these updates won’t break the vast lion’s share of sites. All things being equal, you may feel you would prefer not to face the challenge. Another disadvantage of automatic updates in WordPress is that you won’t always automatically get a notification when your site is updated.

Step 2: Now you have to go to your WordPress Dashboard » Updates Options. Here you can easily configure your settings. Here you can choose to ‘Disable all updates’, to disable all kinds of automatic updates. But I don’t recommend to disable all updates. Because it’ll prevent all update notifications from appearing. Here I prefer to select some specific settings to disable. You may disable plugin and theme auto-updates, but leave the standard core WordPress auto-updates enabled, it’ll update by the core WordPress team.

Disabling Automatic WordPress Updates Without Using any Plugin

Now I’m going to show you how to disable automatic updates in WordPress website without using any plugin. If you don’t want to use any plugin to disable automatic updates on the WordPress website then it’s the best way to do that. Make sure you can modify your core WordPress files properly. If you don’t know to do that then I strongly prohibited to do this.

Step 1: If you want to disable all the automatic updates in the WordPress website then you have to add some codes in your wp-config.php file. To do this go to your  wp-config.php file and add this code. This will disable all automatic updates on your WordPress website.

 define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false );

Step 2: This the process of disabling automatic updates of WordPress theme and plugin. By this method, you can receive minor core WordPress software updates, but disable theme and plugin automatic updates. To do this you need to add filters in your theme’s functions.php file or a site-specific plugin.

To disable automatic WordPress plugin updates just add this filter in your theme’s functions.php file.

 add_filter( 'auto_update_plugin', '__return_false' );

To disable automatic WordPress theme updates just add this filter in your theme’s functions.php file.

 add_filter( 'auto_update_theme', '__return_false' );
